At TJ's Lessons, we believe building character is just as important as building knowledge. That's why we created the Giving Tree Challenge a fun, interactive way for kids to experience the pure joy of giving!

💚 What is the Giving Tree Challenge?

We know giving is so much more than just physical gifts. It’s about sharing time, kindness, encouraging words, helpful actions, and love. This activity is beautifully designed to help children truly grasp this powerful concept in a hands-on way.

It's the perfect fit for:

  • 🏡 Homes: To inspire daily family kindness.
  • 🟢 Classrooms: A great way to build a positive group dynamic.
  • 🎒 After-School Programs & Daycares: Engaging and character-focused fun.

📚 The Perfect Companion: Justin the Incredible

Before you begin your challenge, let's set the stage! Cozy up and read TJ's Lessons - Justin the Incredible together.

This wonderful story teaches children about kindness, generosity, and the importance of helping a friend in need, creating the ideal emotional foundation for your game.

After reading, spark a meaningful discussion by asking your kids:

  • What kinds of things did TJ give in the story?
  • How did his choices make a positive difference for his friend Justin?
  • How can they be "incredible" by giving, sharing, and supporting others today?

This conversation builds a strong, emotional connection, getting them excited to dive into the challenge!

🟢 Get Ready: Simple Supplies

You likely have all of these simple items at home or in your classroom already:

  • Paper (any color)
  • Scissors
  • Crayons or markers
  • Tape or glue
  • A dedicated wall space, door, or fridge to display the tree

Optional: Stickers or glitter for extra festive leaves!

🔨 Setting Up Your Giving Tree

  1. Plant the Trunk: Draw a simple tree trunk (or print one) on a large sheet of paper and hang it up.
  2. Prepare the Leaves: Cut out paper "leaves" or "ornaments" from the paper. These are the rewards of kindness!
  3. Create the Bowl: Place the cutouts in a special basket or bowl near the tree.

✅ Giving Missions: Daily Acts of Kindness

The heart of the challenge! Each day, children get to choose a mission card and complete that genuine act of giving to earn a leaf for the tree. It’s all about putting kindness into action!

Mission Ideas to Get Started:

  • Give someone a meaningful compliment.
  • Share a favorite toy or snack.
  • Write a sweet thank-you note.
  • Help clean up an area without being asked.
  • Give a hug or a high-five.
  • Offer to help with a chore.
  • Let someone else go first.
  • Read to a younger sibling or friend.
  • Invite someone who is playing alone to join the fun.

The Reward: Every completed mission = one beautiful leaf added to your Growing Giving Tree!

✅ How Everyone Wins

In this challenge, there are no losers everyone is a winner! The goal is to collaboratively grow the biggest, brightest Giving Tree through shared acts of kindness and generosity.

Conclude your challenge with a heartwarming reflection session:

  • Which act of giving felt the best for you today?
  • Who did you help, and how do you think it made them feel?
  • What did you learn about being generous and kind this week?

These reflections directly align with TJ’s Lessons’ mission to build emotional intelligence, integrity, and strong character!

🏆 Optional Celebration & Keepsake (Keeping trophy as neutral icon that symbolizes winning)

Make their efforts memorable! Create a tangible keepsake to celebrate your little hero:

  • Design a “Kindness Hero Badge”
  • Print a special “Giving Certificate”

At TJ’s Lessons, we firmly believe that giving isn't about what's in your hands, it's about what's in your heart.

Start your Giving Tree Challenge today and watch your family's kindness bloom!

In our fast-paced world, it's easy to overlook the simple joys and blessings that surround us every day. But what if there was a playful way to help children (and even ourselves!) tune into these moments of appreciation? Enter the **"Thankful Treasure Hunt"** – a heartwarming and meaningful activity designed to cultivate gratitude, one token at a time!

Why Gratitude Matters (More Than You Think!)

Gratitude isn't just a polite "thank you." It's a powerful emotion that has been scientifically linked to increased happiness, resilience, and overall well-being. By intentionally practicing gratitude, children learn to:

  • Boost their mood: Focusing on positives naturally uplifts spirits.
  • Develop empathy: Understanding what others are grateful for fosters connection.
  • Build resilience: Acknowledging good things helps navigate challenges.
  • Improve self-esteem: Recognizing their own blessings contributes to a positive self-image.

And the best part? Teaching gratitude can be incredibly fun!

Ready to Play? Here's How to Host Your Own Thankful Treasure Hunt! 🍊

This activity is perfect for ages 4–10, but easily adaptable for younger or older kids (and yes, even adults love it!).

What You'll Need:

  • Small, colorful paper circles (about 5 per child) – these are your "thankful tokens"!
  • An open mind and a willingness to see the world through fresh eyes.

Let the Hunt Begin!

  1. Prepare Your Tokens: Before you start, cut out those colorful paper circles. These aren't just pieces of paper; they're "thankfulness markers!"

  2. Explain the Mission: Gather your little adventurers and set the scene: "Today, we're going on a Thankful Treasure Hunt! Your mission is to look around and find five things that make your life happier, easier, or better, and place a token beside each one." Emphasize that they don't need to touch or move the items – just mark them!

  3. The Quiet Exploration (3-5 minutes): Give the children a few minutes to quietly explore the room or area. Watch as their eyes light up, noticing things they might usually take for granted.

*Think about what they might find: A cozy blanket, a favorite toy, a delicious snack, a beloved book, or even just the warm sunshine streaming through the window!

  4. Sharing Our Treasures: Once everyone returns, it's time for the most heartwarming part: sharing! Invite each child to complete the gratitude sentence: "I'm thankful for _______ because _______." This encourages confident speaking, emotional awareness, and a beautiful sense of shared appreciation.

  5. The Bonus Reflection Token: Here's where the magic deepens! Say, "Now think of ONE thing you didn't really notice before today, but now realize you're truly thankful for." This nudges them towards deeper, often more abstract, forms of gratitude.

  6. A Group Gratitude Moment: To seal the positive feelings, invite everyone to repeat together, "I notice good things. I appreciate good things. I am thankful."

Take the Gratitude Further!

Variation Description
Thankfulness Wall Tape all the tokens onto a poster titled: "We Are Thankful!"
Gratitude Journals Encourage kids to draw or write about one thing they chose.
Thank-You Cards Inspire them to make a card for someone special they appreciate.

Pair it with a Story!

a For an extra touch of inspiration, consider pairing this activity with: “It Pays to Be Good, It Pays to Be Nice.”™ This TJ’s Lessons story beautifully reinforces kindness, gratitude, appreciation, and the impact our attitude has on others, making it the perfect read-aloud before or after the activity.

This "Thankful Treasure Hunt" isn't just a game; it's a doorway to a more positive, appreciative outlook on life. Try it with your family or classroom this week and watch the smiles (and gratitude!) bloom!
